Editors’ Notes

There’s a recurring lyrical theme in Lost Lander’s 2012 debut, Drrt: we need to unplug from technology and return to nature. Funny, then, that Drrt was created via remote access (i.e. computer) between tunesmith Matt Sheehy and producer Brent Knopf. But this sort of contradiction is what enlivens the album with creative tension. “Dig (How It Feels To Lay in the Soft Light)” contrasts wood-toned acoustic guitars with heavy electric six-string distortion, as Sheehy laces his lyrics with outdoorsy images culled from his experiences as a forester in the Pacific Northwest. Knopf’s kinetic production in “Kangaroo” invokes memories of Beck’s sonic collages of the '90s, while the backward guitars and trotting beats of “Belly of the Bird/Valentina” backpedal for a subtle '60s-flavored psychedelic effect. The sleepy “Through Your Bones” takes a minimal approach, with Sheehy’s pristinely pronounced inflections swimming over fingerpicked guitar and Nicole Portley’s lush string arrangements to create a song that sounds like a sibling to tracks by Will Oldham and Samuel Beam.

Paratatat

I haven't found a band that makes my heart paratatat the way that Lost Lander does in a very long time. Matt Sheehy and Bret Knopf have become my favorite songwriter and producer. When I found this band I should have known that they were involved the moment I heard it. From Menomena to Ramona Falls and now Lost Lander, Bret Knopf has had something to do with creating a sound that fills that void in my heart for beautiful music. Thank you for filling that void yet again.

Biography

Formed: 2011 in Portland, Oregon

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

An evocative indie rock outfit from Portland, Oregon founded by songwriter, forester, and touring member of Ramona Falls Matt Sheehy, Lost Lander crafts structured, melody-driven indie pop with an emphasis on the bucolic. Steeped in the lush and overcast patina of the Pacific Northwest, Lost Lander's 2011 debut album, DRRT, which focused on the junction of nature and technology, featured production work from Menomena's Brent Knopf. As much a collaborator as a producer, Knopf's idiosyncratic production...
