Album Review

Polbo, with their 2006 self-titled debut, joins the ever-growing cast of characters on the rock en espanol stage with all the stripped-down, geeky charm they can muster. Don't worry, there's plenty, and it's effective. With a warm, non-aggressive sound that harkens to the good-natured rock of yesteryear, Polbo sidles up next to the listener without pretension and asks, "wanna be friends?" Retro guitar tones, warbling B-3, and sizzling cymbals conjure images of black horn-rimmed glasses and velvet-decked martini lounges. The DVD component accompanying the CD features a series of charmingly low-budget music videos that are characteristically creative and artsy in their approach. The aesthetic of both the musical selections and the videos is pleasingly nerdy/hip, reminiscent of American groups like Weezer and Nerf Herder. The production, though clear and lively, has the fuzzy living room intimacy all too often abandoned by modern rock acts in preference toward the epic and dramatic. The Beatlesque singability of the hooks and recklessly fun quality of the instrumental performances make for an irresistibly enjoyable record. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, Rovi

Yo Era Tan Cool Rocks!

This song is one of the best songs I've heard this year so far. If you don't speak/understand Spanish, I recommend you watch the video so you can understand what the song means. Polbo will make a name of themselves as they mature musically (they debutted this year! - 2006).

El rock en PR no ha muerto

Lirica inteligente, buena música y punto...Uno de esos discos que puedes oir completo una y otra vez.

Years Active: '90s, '00s

First spotted in 1998, the band Polbo came together when five students from the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao began combining their love of '60s icons like the Doors and the Beatles and with the '90s sounds of Weezer and Nirvana. After two years of playing shows to faithful members of the Puerto Rican indie and punk scenes, the band cut a five-song demo to sell at gigs. Word of mouth and some positive reviews on the Internet kept the momentum rolling, but it was a slow build and it took until...
