iTunes Review

A legendary producer who left this world far too early, J Dilla (a.k.a. Jay Dee) remains a much-loved beatmaster who has influenced an entire generation of bedroom maestros. Known for his work with A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Slum Village, Jaylib, Frank-N-Dank, and countless others, J Dilla possessed an uncanny ability to craft music for a wide variety of artists. He continually tweaked and morphed his approach while always maintaining that classic Dilla funk. Though he died in 2006 after a long battle with lupus, his art lives on; several posthumous projects have been released over the years. On Rebirth of Detroit—a fully legitimate album, with proceeds going directly to his family—we get 21 new tracks featuring rare and mostly unreleased Dilla beats. They're rocked by a gang of underground emcees, including his younger brother Illa J ("Do It for Dilla"), Amp Fiddler ("Let's Pray Together"), The Almighty Dreadnaughtz ("Ride with It"), and OG extreme rapper Esham ("Big Thangs"). It's a fantastic collection that pays tribute to both Dilla and the hometown he loved. Don't miss the flute-laced "Requiem" or the mellow closer "The Best That Ever Did It."

j dilla changed my life

I hate...

when someone see's Dillas name on a project so they automatically say it's godly and amazing. Dilla is one of the greatest producers ever but this album is ehhh, Dillas beats are all on point but the mixing and mastering is off imo and the rapping is mediocre to average. If Dilla was still alive he wouldn't produce for these rappers. But it's still nice to hear new Dilla

Pitfalls is the best song on this album! Each song is epic and it's amazing to hear these artists come together in such a big way. Definitely a favorite purchase of mine!!!

Frequently and rightly placed in the same context as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and Kanye West, J Dilla (aka Jay Dee) built and sustained a high standing as a producer's producer while maintaining a low profile. When Pharrell Williams appeared on BET's 106 & Park in 2004, he excitedly declared that Dilla was his favorite producer and told an audibly stumped crowd that it had probably never heard of the man. At the time, Dilla had been active for well over a decade and had netted enough beats -- including...
