This set assembles about everything The Flying Burrito Brothers recorded in their first four years, including rarities, their two classic country-soul-rock albums with storied singer/songwriter Gram Parsons, and their unheralded third album. The latter is worth noting now: it featured singer Rick Roberts and his gentle country rockers (“Colorado,” “Hand to Mouth”), plus sweet reboots of Bob Dylan’s “To Ramona,” Merle Haggard’s “White Line Fever," and Gene Clark’s “Tried So Hard.” Both lineups of the band were emotive, stirring, and often sorrowful—more about downing draft beer in dimly lit honky-tonks than shouting it out in rock ’n’ roll concert halls.
The Best You've ****Really**** Never Heard in Your Life
Gram Prasosn gets the credit for the Fyling Burrito Brothers but there is much more than his presence. It is the confluence of his years with the Byrds and musical preferences but more importantly the tightly formed rhythm section that makes Parson's arrangements come to life (some of these songs are old county & western standards). Musically is it folk, blues, rock and country (dubbed American Cosmic music by Gram) but instrumentally it is simply superb. Whether a drummer, bassist, guitarist (acoustic, slide or electric) this has something for everyone that enjoys the lazy twang of country, folk or the Americana genre. With a honky tonk subject matter of drunken nights (Close Up the Honky-Tonks; Dim Lights, Thick Smoke; Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down), wanderlust (Colorado; White Line Fever; Six Days on the Road), prison (Sing Me Back Home) or women/love (The Devil in Disguise; Dark End of The Street; Do you Know How It Feels --Aretha Franklin covered it; or Hot Burrito #1 & #2.) I can't say enough about the Burritos: Almost everything here is a four or five star song and even those not-too-popular hits offer something unique to remember them by--Hippie Boy; Man In The Fog; Hand to Mouth--but are still inherently enjoyable. I think the best part of this album--which makes it hard to listen to--is the variety of songs. If you buy the album, spend some time listeneing and then re-sort the songs to match your mood. The nature of an anthology is to pick the best, which was performed rather well--but the drawback is the diversity of the music as played out through song order. Nonetheless, once you discover what you have, you'll be a true fan. PS: this album is on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
Gram Parsons' Genius on Display
This compilation is a masterpiece of Southern Cal Country. This is what you get when you take a bunch of California hippies who love traditional country music, give them a steel guitar, a big bag of green and some California sunshine. Put simply, this is outstanding country music with 60's soul and sensibilities. From the outstanding covers of Dylan (If You Gotta Go) and Aretha (Do Right Woman) to killers like Wheels, Lazy Days, and the phenominal Six Days on the Road, this is a knock-out. If you love country music, the Byrds, the Dead or other country-influenced rock, you need to check this out. Gram Parsons was a genius. Buy this.
