Editors’ Notes

When Dirty Fences’ eponymous EP dropped in 2012, it was as if New York’s '70s punk sound had risen from the dead like some pegged blue-jean Lazarus. Every song here sounds as if it were painstakingly recorded with attention to period-correct detail—from their vintage instruments, two-inch analog-tape fidelity, intimidating attitudes, and knack for writing catchy songs. The opening “Keep Your Kitten Inside” kicks off the EP sounding like a band that could have toured the East Coast with The Dictators back in the day. Similarly, “East Gun Hill” recalls the kind of post garage-rock punk that existed before the term “punk rock” was even coined. “I Saw You There” throws the same kinds of punches used by The Damned and Real Kids, save for some clever melodies that are purely Dirty Fences. While Dirty Fences are unabashedly retro, their approach to crafting infectious melodies and well-thought-out arrangements are original elements that keep things sounding fresh and interesting. “Sid” pulses and punches with streetwise gang vocals before “Bomber” invokes images of CBGB’s embryonic heyday.
