iTunes Review

The supercharged U.K. quintet Jim Jones Revue serves up a breakneck blend of mutant boogaloo and barnstorming garage rock with truly unfeigned abandon and a disregard for volume control. All needles are lodged firmly in the red throughout Burning Down Your House, the group's sophomore full-length. Literally every sound on this record—from pianist Henri Herbert’s deranged boogie-woogie vamps to Jim Jones’ larynx-shredding vocals—is cloaked in distortion. Think of the sound of MC5’s Kick Out the Jams, Blue Cheer's Outsideinside, or of a flight of fighter jets roaring over your head. This can make for an exhausting listen, but the group has the intelligence to switch up its songwriting approach every now and again, and this unexpected stylistic eclecticism ultimately makes Burning Down Your House a rewarding listen. “Shoot First” for instance, borrows some of its primitive energies from John Lennon’s early solo work, while “High Horse” is propelled forward by authentic rockabilly swagger and a searing guitar break that recalls the punk Chuck Berry-isms of X’s ace guitar man Billy Zoom.

Pure Rock & Roll!

Man, if you like loud guitar rock and roll, you gotta get this. Shades of "Raw Power" era Stooges, John Spencer Blues Explosion, The Cramps, and a whole mess of Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. And CRIKEY, get a load of that cover of "Get Back" -- sweaty and dangerous!

This is rock and roll

I hope this is an indication that real, raw rock is back!

This is Straight-Ahead, No Nonsense Rock!

Every song on this album is a Rock n' Roll Scorcher! It has roaring guitars with thundering drums, an energetic "In your Face" singer and a pounding "50's style" piano that ties everything together! . . . . This is "Punch you in the Gut" and "Bash you over the head" Rock!

Formed in 2007 by Jim Jones (formerly of psych-rockers Thee Hypnotics and Black Moses) and Rupert Orton (club promoter and brother of nu-folker Beth), the Jim Jones Revue's raucous piano-driven sound infused the sound, spirit, and style of '50s rock & roll with a wall of blistering garage rock. The Jim Jones Revue -- Gavin Jay, Nick Jones, Henri Herbert, Jones, and Orton -- released their self-titled debut long-player in 2008. This slab of pounding rock & roll exuberance was recorded in just 48...
