Album Review

Athens, GA was a musical hotbed in the '80s, and the Athens-based trio Dreams So Real was in the right place at the right time. Musically, Dreams So Real differed from their more successful city counterparts R.E.M., but their sound was also not as distinctive as Michael Stipe's crew. Sometimes they sounds strangely like the Moody Blues. There are some decent songs among the ten tracks on Rough Night in Jericho, including the title track. An okay album by an okay band.

I'm still an angel when I get back to home

They were unfortunate enough to come along during a period of music history dominated by Glam Metal and then Grunge, and their clean, crisp sound and insightful song writing just wasn't what the masses were craving at the time. Rough Night and Gloryline are both great albums that have stood the test of time far better than the music that drowned DSR out in the late 1980's - when was the last time you dialed up Warrant or Nelson on the old ipod? Twenty years later, the music is still top notch, the song writing still resonates, and hopefully the timing is right for a come back. Speaking of which, the band is officially back together and will perform at least once, at AthFest in Athens, GA this summer. Cannot wait to see an old favorite live!

Great Debut album from Dream So Real

I disagree with Itunes on this one. This is a much more interesting and focused recording than their follow up album. It may not be overly diverse, but diversity led to lost focus on the follow up. This is a great album from 1988. So strong and popular in fact, that for a time, it received more local airplay than Athens counterparts B52's and REM. I found this very approachable set, solid all the way through. It captures the sound of late 80s post modern rock well, by utilizing a combination of folky rock with occasional moody guitar, vocal harmonies, and enough catchy hooks and lyrical prowess to present a very interesting and enjoyable set. They have an original sound, but carry elements of REM, Little America, David & David, The Del Feugos, and even The Church. Good Stuff. They might have fared better if they had kept their debut producer or gone with someone else for Gloryline. I saw them at the Jewish Mother, in Virginia Beach in the early 90's and they were just great as a three piece.Good stuff, and glad it's finally on Itunes, as this has been out of print by Arista since the mid-late 90's. The whole album is good, but favorite tracks are: Heart of Stone, Bearing Witness (2nd Single), Rough Night In Jericho (1st single), Melanie, Love Fall Down, & Californa

Rough Night In Jericho

I loved this album (I actually had the tape) in college and I'm so stoked they are now on itunes, I'm buying the album right now. These guys were so unappreciated and under-rated. I wish they'd stuck around. Thanks, itunes, for including them in the library!

Formed: 1984 in Athens, GA

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '80s, '90s

One of the lesser-known guitar pop bands to emerge from the fertile Athens, GA, music scene of the mid-'80s, Dreams So Real formed in 1984. Singer/guitarist Barry Marler met bassist Trent Allen and drummer Drew Worsham in a local record store, and within a year the trio released its first single, the psychedelia-inspired "Everywhere Girl." The single was produced by R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, who also helmed Dreams So Real's first full-length effort, 1986's Father's House. A featured appearance...
