Editors’ Notes

Recorded for the Shreveport, Louisiana-based Paula label, Dreaming Out of Season is the sole LP from the East St. Louis vocal group the Montclairs. There are two things that separate this LP from the dozens of like-minded sweet soul albums recorded in the same era: the soaring, versatile voice of Phil Perry, and the production and arrangement work of Oliver Sain. While other soul LP’s were often slapdash affairs built around two or three strong singles, Dreaming Out of Season is as fleshed out and fully realized as works by Marvin Gaye and the O’Jays. “Do I Stand A Chance” and “Dreaming’s Out of Season” are more like suites than songs, cycling through several moods and sections before resolving themselves to Perry’s singularly mournful wail. Dreaming Out of Season doesn’t just prove the potential of this short-lived quintet, it validates sweet soul as a vehicle for innovation and ranks with the great Gamble-Huff productions as proof of just how much the genre could accomplish.

I have searched for this album for the longest. This is pure genius. Phil Perry is "The Man"!

Dreamin' is HOT

This is one of my favorite romantic albums. Perry is great. So much feeling and heart in his singing and song writing. I would play is album all the time when I was running girls in college. I also would listen to it (Beggin' is hard to Do or Grand Finale) when I needed inspiration when one of them would break my heart. ;-). My best friend "borrowed" it 25 years ago... thanks iTunes for returning it back to me...

Formed: 1969

Genre: Traditional Pop

Years Active: '70s

An East St. Louis soul vocal group, the Montclairs recorded some fine heartache ballads in the early '70s that deserved better fates than they got. Kevin Sanlin, Phil Perry, George McLellan, David Frye, and Clifford Williams debuted for Arch in 1969. They moved to Paula in the '70s. None of their singles ever cracked the R&B Top 30 ("Beggin' Is Hard to Do" and "Dreaming out of Season" came close), but such songs...
