iTunes Review

Joan Jett’s best asset has nothing to do with the volume at which she plays guitar and sings, or the fact that she helped define what it means to be a potent distaff rock ’n’ roller in what was traditionally an all-dude’s game. Nah, her best asset is she’s made a career of creating big, loud, wondrous albums that are really rock ’n’ roll love letters to glam and punk and girl groups and bubblegum and pop. She kickstarted that tradition here (alongside super-pop songwriter-producer Kenny Laguna) on her 1980 debut solo album, a year after her band The Runaways ran out of gas. From the pogo confessional of the title track to Leslie Gore’s stand-taking “You Don’t Own Me” to the chugga-chugga riff-out of “Don’t Abuse Me” to the power readings of two Gary Glitter greats (“Doing Alright with the Boys” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me”), Bad Reputation is class-act rock ’n’ roll, not classic rock. It’s fitting that the unmistakable Sex Pistols attack of guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook, as well as Blondie men Clem Burke and Jimmy Destri, are also featured.

By playing pure and simple rock & roll without making an explicit issue of her gender, Joan Jett became a figurehead for several generations of female rockers. Jett's brand of rock & roll is loud and stripped-down, yet with overpowering hooks -- a combination of the Stones' tough, sinewy image and beat, AC/DC chords, and glam rock hooks. As the numerous covers she has recorded show, she adheres both to rock tradition and breaks with it -- she plays classic three-chord rock & roll, yet she also loves...
