Nice Packaging Of Her Vintage Material

This generous boxed set at four cd's neatly assembles Dolly's work for her early label association and ends with her Columbia years, now a part of BMG which owns her RCA recordings as well. Licensing for this set was no longer an issue and it's nice to see it all here along with outtakes. Just when you think you know everything about Dolly something comes along, I had no idea she wrote the anthem "Everything Is Beautiful (In It's Own Way)". That song, not released by her, was a huge cover song in the seventies. I really wish this boxed set was subtitled to indicate this is indeed a collection of her early work up to Columbia, her post work like her brief association with Universal that produced her cover album "Treasures" that included her hit cover of "Peace Train" and her first return to rootsy country "Hungry Again" with it's hit "Paradise Road" to her masterful Sugar Hill Bluegrass albums, her second covers cd "Those Were The Days" to her latest "Backwoods Barbie" are not represented at all probably due to licensing issues which is sad, a lot of those sets are out-of-print, maybe this boxed set will spark renewed interest and those cd's might be re-issued. In the meantime this set is indeed stuffed to the brim with 99 Dolly ditties very well mastered. The price here is cheap but for ten dollars more this four disc set comes with a very informative booklet containing Dolly's history and many, many photos.

It's difficult to find a country performer who has moved from her country roots to international fame more successfully than Dolly Parton. Her autobiographical single "Coat of Many Colors" shows the poverty of growing up one of 12 children on a rundown farm in Locust Ridge, Tennessee. At 12 years old, she was appearing on Knoxville television; at 13 she was recording on a small label and appearing on the Grand Ole Opry. Her 1967 hit "Dumb Blonde" (which she's not) caught Porter Wagoner's ear, and...
