First Vollenweider I've bought in ages

I was first introduced to Vollenweider with his White Winds, then Magica Caverna albums, but I lost interest when he seemed to be rehashing the same beats. Then I happened to hear Morgana Palace, which reminded me a lot of White Winds, but with a fresh spin. I bought Kryptos and gave the album a thorough listening, and two tunes stand out, though the entire album is worth your time; Wanja The Wanderer is both melodic and soulful to the point aching. Forest Folks has a playful, classical sound that almost forces you to smile. In both the harp is present but not overbearing. I find myself returning to this album, and to those two tunes time and again. Two other standouts are Passionata and Bhambororo! Passionata has the flavor of a bohemian night club in a Parisian back alley. The melody is rich and steamy. And Bhambororo is just plain fun. A really nice album.

Symphonic Jazz

Vollenweider is a true muse - an inspired musician whose music reaches deep within the listener to explore thoughts and feelings in a manner that the majority of artists certainly attempt, but rarely succeed in doing. KRYPTOS follows BOOK OF ROSES in his discography and he further explores the symphonic underpinnings of the previous set here. It is a rich tapestry he weaves and the story is one you wish to revisit again, and again.

Andreas Vollenweider was one of the few musicians to gain superstar status as a "new age artist" back when the term was first used as a marketing category in the mid-'80s. The Swiss harpist, however, quickly transcended the need for alternative record sales when his albums simultaneously broached Billboard's pop, jazz, and classical charts in 1986. Born in Zurich in 1953, Vollenweider was ensconced in the city's fine art scene, courtesy of his father, one of Europe's leading organists. After becoming...
