Solti's pacing surprises

I was blown away (well, more like, blown over) at first by Solti's speed in this recording. The overture nearly breaks out of the speakers when you hear it-- you can sense that the violinists are all whispering profanities under their panting breath. But it works and it's a thrilling, lively, anxious rendition of Mozart's (arguably) greatest contribution to classical music. Terfel is big, somewhat messy and booming and vocally dominates any scene; Fleming gives an exquisitively sung Donna Anna that radiates lust, anger and the hope for attention; the Octavio is not good, especially in comparison to his Anna but that actually highlights the plot between them; Leporello is funny and well sung. All in all, a very engaging recording!

It's good, but not the best.

While I like the fact Bryn Terfel's Don Giovanni couldn't be any nastier and big voiced if he wanted to, He's just too boorish to play a good Don. The Don should be slick and subtle with many of his arias, but Terfel just sings as loud as he can. However, the rest of the cast is pretty good, and Solti's conducting is superb.
