On 2010's Phosphene Dream, Austin psych-rock progenitors The Black Angels boarded a train of thought headed for the groovy unknown. The long strange trip takes a layover in Indigo Meadow. The Black Angels create more mesmerizing Animals and Velvet Underground-inspired ruminations on a wide range of topics, from synesthesia (“I Hear Colors”) to gun safety (“Don’t Play with Guns”). The Farfisa whine and Alex Maas’ vintage vocal phrasing color Indigo Meadow in a late-summer sepia tone, the fuzz on the guitar and bass requiring more than just a lint roller to remove from memory.

I have been a Black Angels fan for about five years now and I intend to buy every EP/LP they release regardless of my preconceived (and extraneous) notions regarding the cover art or the pre-release sound bites iTunes dangles before our ears. I missed the kaleidoscopic art from their previous albums but I got over it. All in all I was more pleased than displeased, but there was a fair amount of displeasure. Indigo Meadow felt watered down and diluted with perhaps an unhealthy amount of refinement. Compared to "Directions to See a Ghost", "Indigo Meadow" felt like a junkie with a year of clean time- tamed and docile with an unrelenting edge about him. Alex Maas refrained from his impulsive howling and I no longer felt trapped inside a house of mirrors that shattered with penetrating reverb. There are hints of this kind of full blown, mind-rattling in "I Hear Colors". The Black Angels are a minimalist band- they have successfully recreated a rich sound of psychedelia from the 60’s while adding an intimate gloominess that is trademarked by their droning repetition and death march cords. (i.e. "Sniper at the Gates of Heaven") With the exception of "Black isn’t Black" I found this characteristically somber tone to be lacking. All of this being said, they have still held onto a unique and timeless sound that I truly appreciate. The lyrics are catchy and daydream inducing and they really hold some of these tracks together. I’m sure this one will grow on me.

If Every album sounded the same you'd still complain

I have been a longtime fan of this band and to see their evolution has been great. I have all of their albums on vinyl including this one and despite what other people have wrote it's a great album. This is an experimentation in the same genre. You can't grow if you play the same thing every album. It takes some getting used to. Of course you won't like all of the songs on the album, but to say its a Doors rip off or that it was rushed and is garbage is a ridiculous claim. Not everyone likes their Directions to See a Ghost record. Look, Phosphene Dream was a complete left turn from what they previously sounded like. To call a work of art garbage is absurd because this could be what they black angels wanted to create, to take psychedelic music in a new direction. I'm glad they play what they want to play and don't conform to a standardized formula where every song needs a guitar solo to ho platinum. Most music that gets chosen to be played on the radio constantly is a product of the corporate machine trying to tell us what music is. That's why gems like the black angels will remain the best psychedelic band to never see the light of day. They will have my support till the day i die. Don't listen to the haters, those people are the product of the corporate machine telling them this is garbage because there isn't a routine guitar solo in it.
