Editors’ Notes

With its 2008 debut album, the Gothenburg, Sweden–based Graveyard set itself apart from the pack of wolves chomping on Black Sabbath’s early discography. The opening “Evil Ways” eschews doom metal's typically rudimentary arrangements for progressive changes and a squealing wah-wah guitar style that’s more rooted in Jimi Hendrix’s exaggerated take on blues-rock. Singer Joakim Nilsson’s voice gets pumped through vintage distortion as he howls like he’s never seen sunshine. There’s even more finesse in the band’s musicianship on the following “Thin Line,” a slower-paced standout that balances Nilsson’s low and throaty howls with a higher falsetto in the chorus, matching him note-for-note. Not since Grand Funk Railroad have these kinds of vocal harmonies blended so well with proto-metal. This bleeds into “Submarine Blues,” which also contrasts catchy, sunny melodies with a riff-peppered rocker that on its own sounds tougher than a biker gang winding out in third gear on the freeway. Graveyard flirts with shadowy occult imagery in the closing “Satan’s Finest”—among the groovier songs written about the devil.

amazing album

must buy if you are into blues influenced metal. Any stoner should enjoy this.

this album is really unique and original. Call me crazy but I think "Thin Line" needs to be on the radio, it would be huge. Some of the songs fall a bit flat, but the good ones outweigh the mediocre. This is a very talented, very underrated group.

My New Favorite Band!

I recently purchased two of graveyard’s cd. i love them both.

Original members Joakim Nilsson (guitar and vocals), Truls Mörck (guitar and vocals), Rikard Edlund (bass), and Axel Sjöberg (drums) were moved by the legacy of giants such as Cream and Black Sabbath, and quickly recorded their first demo. Rather quickly thereafter, the band scored a dual distribution deal with both Tee Pee Records and Transubstans. Their debut album, simply entitled...
