Film/TV/stage actor and author Molly Ringwald has been singing live since age three, when she first sat in with her pianist father Bob Ringwald’s traditional jazz band. That experience on the bandstand shines through on her Concord Records debut, Except Sometimes. “Sooner or Later,” a Stephen Sondheim number written for the 1990 feature film adaptation of Dick Tracy, opens with Ringwald conveying time-earned sophistication and a simpatico rapport with pianist/musical director Peter Smith. She’s assured on the Frank Loesser uptempo standard “I Believe in You,” with trumpeter Winston Byrd firing off an inspired solo. “Exactly Like You” has an “outro giggle” by her son, Roman Ringwald Gianopoulos, which potentially recontextualizes the meaning of this sweet chestnut. A simmering take on Simple Minds' “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” from 1985's The Breakfast Club (the film in which she’s immortalized as popular girl Claire Standish) quietly transforms that pop hit.
