iTunes Review

Proof positive that you can still be a formidable rapper with more than 20 years in the game, hip-hop icon Scarface continues to impress on Dopeman Music, a mixtape-style release that showcases his always imposing lyrical prowess while also giving shine to the latest incarceration of his Facemob crew. His newest protégés (including B. James and Monk Kaza) are talented and competent, though next to ‘Face, even well-established superstars usually pale in comparison. The production ranges from triumphant soul samples ("Picking Up The Pieces") to more modern, synth-centric jams ("Lyrical Assault"), but as usual, it's the riveting wordplay that steals the show. The hustle and coke rhymes are all great, but things are even better when he goes deep on topics like immigration ("The N Word") and washed-up party girls ("Get Lost"). Overall, more great music from an undisputed legend.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Scarface quickly became the South's most admired rapper and remained so throughout the '90s after breaking away from the Geto Boys to launch his solo career in 1991. Even if he never scored any national hits or stormed up the charts with any of his numerous albums throughout the '90s, no one could question his clout throughout the South. He essentially defined what it meant to be a Southern thug rapper years before anyone even coined the term Dirty South. This became glaringly evident in the late...
