iTunes Review

In just a few short years Buddy Holly wrote and recorded a sizable amount of rock ‘n’ roll classics that sound just as fresh fifty years later. With an economy of style, Holly forged a sound of teen angst with a small yet intensely tight band, and later with studio musicians who would wrap his heavily melodic ballads in sweet, careful arrangements. This collection pulls together Holly's entire career from his early recordings with Bob Montgomery to the Crickets' various permutations to his New York solo recordings and the "apartment tapes" that show he was hardly out of ideas when his career was cut tragically short in a plane crash. It's impossible to go wrong with songs as sturdy and unflinching as "I'm Gonna Love You Too,” "Oh Boy!," "Maybe Baby," "Rave On," "Peggy Sue" and "Learning the Game." Holly was deceptively simple with a casual delivery that made everything he recorded sound obvious and natural, as if these songs had always existed. His influence on future generations can be heard throughout.

Customer Reviews

Finally, a worthy retrospective for Holly fans in the digital age.

All the hits, essential album tracks and a few rarities to boot. It's about time. How about releasing the "Complete Buddy Holly" Box Set now.

It all started here.

Buddy's an icon that's too quickly looked over. You've heard his songs before but you might not know it's him. As you listen your way thorough this great set of songs you might just find yourself saying "hey, I didn't know he sang that...I love this song!" Old and young alike can dig Buddy Holly and come away pleased and refreshed. Early tracks are a little country for those looking for classic rock-n-roll. Start with "Midnight Shift" and skip to "Rock Around With Ollie Vee" and you've just heard two wonderful examples of Buddy's work. Next is "Words of Love" - it's perfect. If you like that vibe continue with "Well...All Right". Don't forget to listen to "Lonesome Tears" as well. It's a favorite among long time Buddy fans and one of my favorites as well. This collection encompasses the wide range of Buddy's work so it isn't for everyone but, honestly, it should be. This is a great set.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '50s

Buddy Holly is perhaps the most anomalous legend of '50s rock & roll -- he had his share of hits, and he achieved major rock & roll stardom, but his importance transcends any sales figures or even the particulars of any one song (or group of songs) that he wrote or recorded. Holly was unique, his legendary status and his impact on popular music all the more extraordinary for having been achieved in barely 18 months. Among his rivals, Bill Haley was there first and established rock & roll music; Elvis...
