Editors’ Notes

Court and Spark sits halfway between Joni Mitchell’s folkie past and her jazz-rock future. Yet the album is no mere transitional affair—not by a long shot. On “Help Me” and “Just Like This Train,” she displays a master’s touch, weaving romantic insecurities into arrangements that, decades later, haven’t surrendered their sophistication. The versatile singer/songwriter also finds the time to cut loose, which she does in typically elegant fashion on the wah-wah rocker “Raised on Robbery.” Try not listening to this album a dozen times in a row.

Customer Reviews

Brilliant. And it gets better EVERY time. Buy this record. Trust me.

Court and Spark is a classic. It's beautifully written, devastating, romantic, funny and, most of all, groovy. Every track is a 10, but if you must download one, try Car On A Hill. Also, watch for Cheech & Chong's guest appearance on Twisted. Personally, Trouble Child gets me every time... Poetic, amazing, truly original. BUY THIS RECORD NOW.

One of The Best Albums Ever Recorded

I first heard this record in 1975 in a record store in Dallas, TX. The store manager played Free Man in Paris, and at the age of 16, I was blown away. Despite a couple of hits (Help Me and Free Man in Paris), this is an album that should be enjoyed in it's entirety. It competes with anything from the Beatles or Beach Boys. Totally original, but accessible. You don't have to try and figure out obscure lyric references or play the record backwards to get the meaning. These lyrics are beautifully written and they make sense. Pour a glass of wine and sit back. You will love this record.

Joni knocked it out

I tend to agree with the other reviews. This one is Classic and a real work of genius. This is why after 30+ years, I still listen to it. A real tour-de-force. Get it, chill and really listen. It's wonderful.

No female artist better typified the singer/songwriter movement of the '70s than Joni Mitchell, though her public image as the serious, sensitive woman with a guitar shortchanged her abilities, ambitions, and accomplishments. Mitchell's gift for writing personal, folk-inspired songs about the thorny side of life and love was inarguable (particularly on albums like 1970's Ladies of the Canyon and 1971's Blue), but Mitchell also brought the same smarts and eloquence to glossy pop on her commercial...
