iTunes Review

Alt-country superstar Lucinda Williams’ first album for her own label, Highway 20 Records, is a 20-song double album that rocks, shuffles, and sways for a remarkable 104 minutes, an epic by anyone’s count. Key here, Williams put together a no-nonsense band of pros, including coproducer and pedal steel man Greg Leisz, drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), keyboardist Ian McLagan (Faces), and guitarists Bill Frisell and Tony Joe White, who make it easy for her to settle into grooves. She's mastered her vernacular; songs like “This Old Heartache,” “West Memphis,” and the 10-minute closer of J.J. Cale’s “Magnolia” never waste a second.

Cross-Country Music

This is a brilliant, profound, heart-felt, rockin' set of songs, absolutely worth the money and the time. Only a 61 year old could write and sing with such insight, pain, wisdom, humor and sexiness. You have to live a good, strong life as a human and as an artist to create a masterpiece like this. Listening to this wonder of the world is like being in the room with someone you have always wanted to know and getting to know them and finding out that what you learn is even more amazing than you imagined. Thank you Ms. Williams. Top of the Mountain.

First album on her new label!!!

Giving Lucinda “complete control” has left me completely thrilled. Congratulations to Lucinda & Co. on a powerful beauty! Lucinda’s bluesy groove is what I crave and I have found it yet again here with “Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone”. Nice.

Awesome.

God what a great record.

The object of cultish adoration for years, singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams was universally hailed as a major talent by both critics and fellow musicians, but it took quite some time for her to parlay that respect into a measure of attention from the general public. Part of the reason was her legendary perfectionism: Williams released records only infrequently, often taking years to hone both the material and the recordings thereof. Plus, her early catalog was issued on smaller labels that agreed...
