Editors’ Notes

The younger brother of mercurial beat maestro Madlib, Oh No emerged from his sibling’s shadow in the mid-‘00s and began to develop his own distinctive style as a producer and MC. Oh No ventured into the world of instrumental albums with Dr. No’s Oxperiment, constructed solely from samples of obscure Middle Eastern psych and funk records from the ‘60s and ‘70s. 2009’s Dr. No’s Ethiopium is something of a sequel to Oxperiment. While Oxperiment looked to Turkish psychedelia and Lebanese folk-rock for source material, Ethiopium draws exclusively from the heady, intoxicating sounds of the Ethiopian jazz scene of the ‘60s and ‘70s. During this period, singers like Tilahun Gèssèssè and Mahmoud Ahmed fronted gifted instrumental combos whose music was a curious fusion of traditional Ethiopian melodies and American jazz and R&B. By cutting up samples of these records, Oh No has created a set of 36 brief but beguiling hip-hop instrumentals that partake of the same wobbly late-night atmosphere that illuminates the work of J. Dilla and Madlib.

Customer Reviews

these days, almost every mainstream hip hop producers wants to make club bangers. It's good to see that there's stlill some hip hop producers that put time and effort into their music...and that there's still fans like us who appreciate it

Ethiopium has 36 tracks and each one takes you to another world..
A great follow up to Oxperiment..
Its just straight up dope..

I never write reviews but...

This album demands one. If you are thinking about purchasing this, go for it! This is music that grows with you, and music you can take anywhere. How can the same album be so superb for chillaxin' or a 10 mile run? The flow on this record is off the charts. Multiple listens reward with the revealing of further and further subtleties: Like how the hissing of many of the samples taken from vinyl give tracks a welcome rawness and character. After waiting a while, I just bought Oxperiment and the only question I'm asking myself is, why did I wait so long?

As if the family weren't busy enough, son Michael (brother of DJ phenom Madlib, son of soul singer Otis Jackson, Sr., and nephew of jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis) also decided to try his hand in the music world. Nicknamed Oh No the Mischievous Rebel by Lootpack MC Wildchild, the youngest Jackson soon shortened his name to simply "Oh No." Hooked on DJ'ing and rapping since age 11, Oh No would practice making beats during breaks at work. The effort paid off when Oh No recorded his first singles with Stones...
