iTunes Review

It’s not the authentic cadence of folk and rock in the context of Southern California, or even the thinly veiled nods to drugs (“Strange Young Girls,” for example), that made The Mamas & The Papas’ happy-hippie stance seen so ironic yet timeless. It was John Phillips’ clever songwriting, arranging, and production that did it: he was a true ’60s pop genius, second only to Brian Wilson. Proof is here, in this essential set that collects the band’s four ’60s albums. Nearly every song and harmony haunts, from the beguiling “California Dreaming” to the pop-eerie “Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Going to the Canyon).”

Thomas Wolfe was wrong

If you came of age in the 60s, the harmonies of Denny, Cass, Michelle and John are etched into your memory. Whether the 60s were good to you or not, the harmonies - and the memories of them - are sweet. If you weren't around then, they will give you insight to our cultural heritage: even in the most turbulent of times produced some wonderful, beautiful music. Buy it.

my view

I remember them from my college days and that I put many of their songs into as my 'songs of summer' group. The world was a safer place albeit the Cuban missile crissis was only a couple of years behind us. And during a 'Gas War' you could fill your tank with 18 cent a gallon regular! Great and pleasant memories. I have remarked to several friends over the years that "if I could only listen to a couple of groups for the rest of time, my choices would include 'the M's and the P's' and ABBA. You could understand the words and sing along without a sheet of lyrics, and the harmonies were too clean.

I'm 11 years old and I would rather listen to these songs a than anything of today's hits anyday. These songs have meaning and teach you about life and how it goes. This was a roughing-it band that made the US happy, and even though nobody these days knows who they are, they still make me happy.

Formed: 1965 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s

The leading California-based vocal group of the '60s, the Mamas & the Papas epitomized the ethos of the mid- to late-'60s pop culture: live free, play free, and love free. Their music, built around radiant harmonies and a solid electric folk foundation, was gorgeous on its own terms, but a major part of its appeal lay in the easygoing southern California lifestyle it endorsed. The group's success was as extraordinary as it was brief, and onlookers may well wonder what went wrong with a performing...
