iTunes Review

There's no doubt that these 55 tracks comprise the ultimate Allman Brothers Band experience. If you want to dig deep into the band's history, Dreams is the way to go. To start with, the first section of this chronological collection offers so many tunes by the groups that the various members were in before the ABB that we're 13 tracks in before we even get to an Allman Brothers Band song. One of the intriguing things gleaned from the pre-Allmans material is the degree of Anglophilia displayed by these Southern boys, with covers of Cream's "I Feel Free" and The Yardbirds' "Shapes of Things." All the ABB classics are here, from the live version of the churning firestorm "Whipping Post" to the good-time country rock of "Blue Sky." But equally important are the less ubiquitous tunes to be found here, like the delicately fingerpicked acoustic guitar instrumental "Little Martha" or the swampy, funky early-'80s tune "Things You Used to Do." Add latter-day solo outings by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts, and you've got as all-encompassing an Allmans anthology as anyone could ask for.

Customer Reviews

A formerly great boxed set.

One star due to the incomplete set. Where's the friggin' You Don't Love Me /Soul Serenade King Curtis tribute from WPLJ, Aug. 71 ? It's one of the best live things anyone has ever recorded, and shows how great this band was on the fly. Who's in charge here? Some douche in a BMW, no doubt.

There's something really important missing here!

This is such a wonderful box set, except this "partial album" stuff is ridiculous. Whoever put this thing together left out the best track on the entire box set by far....You don't love me/Soul Serenade, live. It's incredible and even more incredible that it's been left out of this offering!

5 star set marred by good music missing from it

only for the fact that it is partial and none of the hourglass and allmanjoy stuff is here all in all good stuff

The story of the Allman Brothers Band is one of triumph, tragedy, redemption, dissolution, and more redemption. Since their beginning in the late '60s, they went from being America's single most influential band to a shell of their former self trading on past glories, to reach the 21st century resurrected as one of the most respected rock acts of their era. For the first half of the '70s, the Allman Brothers Band was the most influential rock group in America, redefining rock music and its boundaries....
