iTunes Review

After settling their long-running feud, old friends Mac Dre and Mac Mall reunited at the end of Dre’s life for Da U.S. Open. They are joined by Dubee, J-Diggs, Rydah J. Klyde and E-40, making this a family reunion for the Vallejo rap scene. The album was the first release after Mac Dre’s murder in November 2004, and it became a bittersweet reminder of how sharp his rap skills were at the time of his death. While Rydah and Mall tear into their verses on “Klyde, Mall and Dre,” Dre’s section is a lesson in effortless cool. You can witness Dre pushing Bay rap forward with “Giggin’” and “Willingly,” but the best songs come at the end. “Maca.Frama.Lamma” is a signature Mac Dre song in the tradition of “Nothin’ Correctable” and “Fish Head Stew.” The best of the bunch is undoubtedly “Dredio,” a song based on Royal Cash’s 1983 electro classic “Radio Activity.” Dre and Mall jump on the track like it was brand new, and with a typically nutty verse from E-40 the song becomes a classic in its own right.

Andre Hicks, aka Mac Dre, soared through his brief life with a focused playfulness ever hinting at the violence in the background. Considered one of the pioneers of the region's hyphy movement, Mac Dre constantly hyped the Bay Area. The Vallejo, California, native built a sprawling empire called Thizz Nation, which released comedy videos and bobblehead dolls in addition to a seemingly bottomless pit of records by Dre himself and his many signees. Although every indication is that he had abandoned...
