Sick with the pimpin' mack styley.

I'm a huge fan of old school pimp soundtracks like Superfly, The Mack, Shaft, etc and I love P-Funk so I was instantly drawn to The One from the cover art. On first listen, it's clear that this man is a pimp, but he's not stuck in 70's retro land, he's putting a modern day twist on it. I'm also a big fan of broken beat and future soul like Bugz in the Attic, Vikter Duplaix, Platinum Pied Pipers and The Rebirth so it's refreshing to hear new artists working within this genre. On top of that though, the production alone on this album is its strongest suit. The deep bass lines, b-boy breaks and strings with mellow piano work all equate to a headnodding vibe reminiscent Pete Rock 'Petestrumentals' and Colosssus 'West Oaktown' (two of my all time faves!). If you're a fan of any of these things, you'll love what The One is doing.

Originality at its finest!

This album has a great mix of beats, with upbeat raw lyrics and originality. I love this album for all these reasons!

Great concept from Om Records' new artist, THE ONE.

Not quite knowing what to expect, i checked out this project. At first i was wondering what was going over at Om Records, however as i dived deeper into the tracklisting, it got me. For starters, the production is top notch. Beautiful melodies intertwined with sinister basslines and off kilter rhythms make for a complex texture that is hard to mimic. The One's multi-tracked vocals plays more as an instrument than a voice, providing a unique and pleasing asthetic to compliment the over all record. The subject matter is just what one would expect from title...topics of relationships gone wrong to vivid bedroom experiences, The One doesnt hold anything back. Over all i give this album an upward 9. I can't wait to play if for my girlfriend...
