Album Review

Superchunk's 1994 Driveway to Driveway EP features the album version of the title track (taken from Foolish) and three acoustic versions of Superchunk songs from previous releases. The song "Driveway to Driveway" is one of the band's crowning achievements. The song is a post-adolescent epic of love gone wrong with Mac McCaughan's finest aching vocals and lyrics and the kind of chorus that will drive anyone who ever had a heart to tears. The acoustic songs are all fine and pointed to a newfound sensitive side to the band. Not that McCaughan sounds any less twisted up with passion, but the band proves staggeringly good at the unplugged thing. "Seed Toss" and "Sick to Move" both manage to rock, and "Driveway to Driveway" is not quite as effective done acoustically but even slowed down and stripped of its epic qualities it is still the kind of song most songwriters would kill to write. If you are a Superchunk fan at all, you shouldn't rest until this disc is in your possession.

global hit

tannis root productions did the art work for this ep back in 94, while i worked there (that's me on the cover) and shortly after, i took off for turkey. while in istanbul, i met an australian kid who had this ep in his collection. i guess it was then that i realized superchunk had moved beyond regional powerhouse and taken over the world. i attribute that success to this ep! it's amazing. sentimental, powerful, short and sweet. one of the perfect rock showings in recent history.

Perhaps no band was more emblematic of the true spirit of American indie rock during the 1990s than Superchunk, the pride of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Following the D.I.Y. ethic to the letter, the bandmembers operated solely by their own rules, ignoring all passing trends by sticking to their trademark sound — typified by the buzzing guitars and high, impassioned vocals of frontman Mac McCaughan — and rejecting all major-label advances in favor of the unlimited freedom afforded by...
