Album Review

Bonnie Tyler's most recent studio album is a mixed bag of tricks — it contains mostly new songs (including her latest international hit, "Louise," in both French and English versions), as well as new recordings of some classics — namely "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "It's a Heartache." The result is an uneven listen and it definitely falls shy of Tyler's Columbia Records or BMG International periods. Unfortunately, the addition of "Total Eclipse" and "It's a Heartache" merely serves to point out that Tyler's work used to be much more powerful and much more daring. If nothing else, the album serves as a herald that Tyler should be re-teaming with a producer of Jim Steinman's caliber to bring out the best in her inimitable voice. Tyler is one of the most powerful female pop vocalists of her generation — but Wings only acts as a reminder as to what exactly made Tyler such a pop phenomenon two decades earlier. Some high points no doubt, but largely — and unfortunately — forgettable.

Really?

Is this "the" Bonnie Tyler that originally did Total Eclipse of the Heart? If it is, why did she redo it? If it is not the original Bonnie Tyler... I think Ma from Ma's RoadHouse is singing. <<just saying>>

Holy cow....

As she growls in this version of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' -- "the best of the years have gone by". This woman's voice is shreaded beyond repair.

None

Too bad I couldn't do a 1/4 of star, and that would be cuz the music is good, but that singing was crap, the raspy growl was horrible, nothing like what it used to be and what I was looking for. Waste of money, good thing it wasn't expensive

Before her well-known collaborations with Meat Loaf producer Jim Steinman, Welsh-born singer Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins) performed off and on in her homeland with the R&B band Mumbles; nodules on her vocal cords prevented her from singing full-time until 1976, when she underwent an operation to have them removed. The surgery left her with a raspy, husky voice that proved an effective instrument and drew notice from writer/producers Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe, who became her managers....
