Album Review

Like Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler (but with less mumble), James McMurtry offers a deep, personable (if plain) voice and delivery, equally suited to both country and rock. The instrumental backing veers between and blurs the two forms, the fluid dynamics rendering the distinction irrelevant. Whatever you call it, the music serves up a perfect backdrop to McMurtry's strong suit — his evocative, short-story lyrics. Eventually, rock appears to win out as guitars veer into overdrive on "Save Yourself" and "Storekeeper"; the disc finally closing with the wistful, acoustic "Dusty Pages."

One of the BEST

This record was my first exposure to James McMurtry, and I was immediately hooked. Although I now own all of his records, it remains one of my favorites - I have owned many iPods since their launch, and this has been a constant selection on each of them. I cannot recommend this album more highly. Meaningful songs, beautiful prose, great musicianship.

Great Singer Song writers don

James McMurtry has the chops, the dead pan delivery, and the catalogue of great songs about life and being miserable that make him a pleasure to listen to. He has a dark gravely voice and always reminded me of an alt country version of Warren Zevon ( or was Zevon the pop version of James McMurtry). However you see it give it a listen to Painting by Numbers from the first album...Don't Waste Away from this album, and you will be pleasantly surprised...if you like the slightly sarcastic neo-alt country tunesmith thing...JBT

McMurtry began performing his own songs while a student at the University of Arizona and continued to do so after returning home and taking a job as a bartender. When it transpired that a film script McMurtry's father had written...
