Editors’ Notes

With his fourth studio album, Dusty Rainbow from the Dark, Jean-Christophe Le Saoût (a.k.a. Wax Tailor) spins aural gold from braiding trip-hop, baroque hip-hop, and downtempo into a brilliant concept album about the enchanted realm of childhood. What’s even more creative is that he crafted this album from salvaged instruments, random textures, and dusty notes pulled from old vinyl records. “Exordium” opens with the hiss of a needle dropping on a record to reveal children’s banter and fantastical carnival music set to a cinematic score and mellow beats. Over this, we hear the familiar voice of Don McCorkindale (Radio BBC's The Avengers) telling the story of a reclusive boy and his record collection (he provides narration throughout). French singer/songwriter Charlotte Savary plays the boy’s mother, first appearing on the alluring title track. By “Phonovisions,” it’s evident that Le Saoût has created an epic fable for the 21st century’s vinyl hounds and their children. The deluxe version offers a digital booklet and a generous 42 tracks that compile radio edits, instrumental versions, and previously unreleased material.

Wax Tailor is Amazing

Best Album yet from the Greatest Electronic Artist Ever!

Original lyrics and music, combined with dialogue culled from various sources; it's not easy to make this stuff work, but WT is masterful at creating, finding, merging, and finally, presenting what, to my ear, is something not perfected by any other artist of the moment. At least, not this well, and not this entertaining. There's a wonderfully dark sense of humor being shared here, as well. 5 stars.

The trip-hop performance moniker of one Jean-Christophe Le Saoût, Wax Tailor first emerged in the French electronica scene in 2004 (with the EP release Lost the Way), but didn't release his debut album until 2006. That debut, Tales of the Forgotten Melodies, was a hit both in France and in the United States, and made quite a dent on the CMJ charts that year. In 2007, Wax Tailor returned to the spotlight with his second full-length, Hope & Sorrow. Featuring vocalist Charlotte Savary...
