Customer Reviews

Very great performances of mostly very great music.

I have in my collection all these Dvorak performances except the Symphony No. 1, and I have heard many other performances, ranging from one other of No. 2 to many others of No. 9. I can say without hesitation that I have never heard another performance of any of them that has given me more pleasure than the Kertesz/LSO performance in this set. The recorded sound is uniformly excellent, Decca's best. The performances have the spontaneity and the inspiration that in the concert hall would result in a standing ovation. The music itself invariably lifts my spirits (although Nos. 1, 2, and 4 are not really among my favorite symphonies). The LSO was then what it is now: one of the world's finest orchestras. Kertesz in these performances inspired them to give their very best. This is a big investment, but we're talking about big pleasure.

Authoritative, Classic Performances

These performances have long been held as definitive and happily the sound has held up well for vintage 1963-4.Testimony to their greatness is that they have rarely been unavailable since their debut. There maybe newer performances with marginally better ensemble and sound but none as idiomatic and pleasurable as these. The early Symphonies 1-4 and # 8 come off best, with the 6th and 9th not far behind. But each performance is nothing less than masterful. You can't go wrong with these classics.

Fire the editor

This is a very accurate reperesentation of the Dvorak sympohnies which are each wonderful. The editing done on this recording is painfully obvious, even to my hack ear. The overall sound quality is also a little on the edgy side.
