Editors’ Notes

For a band that eschewed single releases — they barred them at home in England, while accepting their necessity in the far larger expanse of the U.S. — Led Zeppelin is remembered almost as much for its songwriting talents as the sonically huge rock that made the band legendary. Mothership ranges across Zeppelin’s eight studio albums, gathering cranked-up folk-rock (“Stairway to Heaven”), post-psychedelic drone (“Kashmir”), punky manifestos (“Communication Breakdown”), skewed reggae-pop (“D’yer Mak’er”) and a ’50s-ish request to “take you to the movies” (“Houses of the Holy”). Whether taken as a handy primer for newcomers or a happy reminder of some of the music’s finest moments, the double-album again reveals a four-piece with a lot to say — and loads of imagination with which to say it.

Impossibly Excellent

This is a holy space. Dig around iTunes. There is magic here, in these sounds, that is not reproduced anywhere else. Period.

I could never give them anything less than 5 stars, but come on Apple, Led Zep has to be sold in better quality than 128kbps! I wouldn't even mind the DRM if you guys sold a higher quality version. So instead I'll be buying the CD version of this album. Do yourself a favor, don't compromise on a band like Zep, get the CD (or better yet, the vinyl record). Not only is it much better quality, you also get the goodies in the case. If you don't like your legends to be sold in a neutered download, go to a brick-and-mortar and buy the real deal.

this is to all those who like today's music. i am a teen and only listen to this music at dances... but i am saying this because if you listen to the song "D'yer Mak'er" it has the same rhythm and sound that the song "me love" by sean kingston sounds like..... ALL TODAY'S ARTISTS ARE FAKES.. THEY CANT SING OR PRODUCE THEIR OWN SONGS!!!!

What the Beatles were to the '60s, Led Zeppelin were to the '70s: a band so successful and innovative they wound up creating the prism through which their entire epoch was seen. Zeppelin ushered in the era of album rock -- they refused to release singles off their albums, even when they were garnering massive radio play -- and of arena rock, playing ever-larger stadiums as their ticket sales skyrocketed. Other bands played on a similar field but Led Zeppelin carried a unique mystique cultivated by...
