iTunes Review

As Mick Jones was cast away from the Clash and Joe Strummer hung on to the group trying to recreate the glory days of 1977, Jones picked up with filmmaker Don Letts and went about further exploring the creative reaches of The Clash’s Sandinista! and Combat Rock. By incorporating dance rhythms and acknowledging the growing influence of rap music, B.A.D. were very much a part of their time in 1985 and yet in some ways still beyond much of the formulaic music that has come in its wake. “Medicine Show” is an immediate classic, with movie music samples and dialogue laced into its Dancehall grooves. “Sony” rattles along with a bold, impressionistic, polyrhythmic weave. “E=MC2” adds ‘80s synths and features ensemble vocals that blend with the spoken word clips and other found sounds. An essential document of the era.

A compelling and innovative album

From the first time I dropped the cassette into my car deck, I could tell this was a groundbreaking album. "Medicine Show" was something new from Mick Jones, I expected something more rocking and, well, Clash-ish, but clearly this was meant as a break from that. That song, as well as the whole album, was the first time that I heard sampling in music. MJ is an underrated and unsung genius. In my opinion, this is the best of all the B.A.D. releases. Buy it now!

After Mick Jones was fired from the Clash in 1983, he formed Big Audio Dynamite (B.A.D.) one year later to continue the more experimental funk elements of the Clash's Combat Rock. The group's original incarnation included Jones, video artist and Clash associate Don Letts (effects and vocals), Greg Roberts (drums), Dan Donovan (keyboards), and Leo "E-Zee Kill" Williams (bass). Adding samplers, dance tracks, and found sounds to Jones' concise pop songwriting, B.A.D. debuted on record with the single...
