EDITORS’ NOTES

In the wake of a live EP (Welcome to a New Welcome) and a lead-off track (“Inside the Acorn”) on the cutting-edge UK jazz compilation We Out Here, London combo Maisha arrives with There Is a Place, their debut full-length. Drummer Jake Long leads some of the scene’s most promising players, adding elements of harp, string quartet, and percussion to spark the music’s emotive potential. Nubya Garcia’s tenor sax and dreamy flute, Shirley Tetteh’s sparkling guitar, and Amané Suganami’s warm piano and Wurlitzer ride waves of rhythm and groove that subtly shift and transform on “Osiris” and “Kaa.” The band’s versatility shines through in the spacious acoustic jazz of “Azure,” the fast Afrobeat of “Eaglehurst/The Palace,” and the meditative, out-of-tempo vibe of the title track.
