Violinist Jerry Goodman and keyboardist Jan Hammer away from Mahavishnu. They play all instruments (overdubbed). "Country and Eastern Music" and "Steppings Tones" were high-water marks for this new breed (at the time). Like Children was reissued on CD by Wounded Bird in 2006. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi
A desert island disc by two masters of their craft and instruments! please record together again
Mahavishnu Duet Channels Inner Orchestra
I really wasn't expecting much when I saw this first released after the Mahavishnu Orcherstra broke up. While I enjoy several of the tracks on it and am happy to have it, whomever suggested that Jan and Jerry needed to vocalize should have their ears washed out with soap.
Luckily, the sappy, crappy vocals don't sour the entire recording. Lots of electrifying duets and interplay that made these two an integral part of the best jazz rock fusion band ever.
Without McLaughlin, Cobham and Braun, they make good music, some noise and poor choices. All in all a decent effort and if they ever work together again and have to have vocals, hire a singer.
