Editors’ Notes

Throughout his nearly 40-year career, Israeli singer/songwriter David Broza has sought to transcend cultural borders through his music. His mission has never been clearer than on East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem, a collection of newly composed and cover tunes linked by a spirit of unity. Coproduced by Steve Earle (who duets with Broza on his tune “Jerusalem”), the album was recorded at an East Jerusalem studio over an eight-day stretch and features both Israeli and Palestinian players. Broza chooses his material wisely, pairing up a simmering take of Timmy Thomas’ “Why Can’t We Live Together” with a crisp folk-rock reading on Cat Stevens’ “Where Can the Children Play” and a choir-centered version of Nick Lowe’s “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.” Especially intriguing are the Middle Eastern shadings on a version of Pink Floyd’s “Mother.” Among the originals, “The Lion’s Den” stands out for its Bible-rooted lyrics (written by Israeli-American scientist Judea Pearl), while the title track (a collaboration with Wyclef Jean) adds a dash of Jamaican rhythm to the proceedings.

Stunning Album: Courageous Statement!

This album is an incredible undertaking by long-time Israeli superstar artist and peace activist David Broza. To travel to East Jerusalem and assemble a joint Israeli/Palestinian band, recording songs that yearn for peace while acknowledging present truths was an act of artistic courage on the part of all involved. Producers Steve Earle and Steve Greenberg helped bring Broza's vision to life and in the process made a great album.
