Customer Reviews

READ THIS FIRST BEFORE YOU READ THE OTHER REVIEWS!!!!

Here’s the deal: Months ago Neal Schon said Journey was going in a different direction with “Eclipse”. He said it would be a concept record, he said it would have musicality, and he said there would be NO BALLADS!! And Journey has done just that. This record is built for big guitars, big arenas, and a new generation of Journey fans. This is NOT the journey you grew up on and all you old timers simply need to DEAL WITH THAT!!!! If I read another review that says, “What is this crap? This sounds nothing like the Journey I know. It doesn’t come close to “Don’t Stop Believing” or “Faithfully” I’m probably gonna ralph on myself. NEWSFLASH: “Don’t Stop Believing” is the greatest rock ballad of ALL TIME!!!! Trying to recreate that would do the band a disservice. And just copying the form doesn’t leave room for a band to grow and move forward.

And that’s just what they’ve done with “Eclipse” which is hands down the strongest effort from this band since “Raised On Radio”. Don’t get me wrong, there’s good stuff on “Arrival” and “Generations”. In fact “Butterfly (She Flies Alone)” is one of my favorite Journey songs. And Steve Augeri is a good singer. But none of that work moved the band forward. Even “Revelation”, which I thought was quite good, didn’t move the band.

“Eclipse”, on the other hand, launches off from the the first note of “City Of Hope” and hardly lets up on a record that clocks in at 1hr 10min!!! The music is complex and varied in time signature. The guitars drive the boat, which allows the piano to support in the passenger seat for the first time in a long while. This record shows a band exploring their identity in a fresh way, who they are now as artists. AND ALL YOU HATERS NEED TO RELAX and accept this record as it is along with this band as they are now, not who they were 30 years ago.

I’m gonna put this out there and be unashamed about it. This record should get a grammy nod for rock album of the year. It probably won’t but it should. And if you agree, request it on the radio!! Can’t wait to hear this album live in September.

During their initial 14 years of existence (1973-1987), Journey altered their musical approach and their personnel extensively while becoming a top touring and recording band. The only constant factor was guitarist Neal Schon, a music prodigy who had been a member of Santana in 1971-1972. The original unit, which was named in a contest on KSAN-FM in San Francisco, featured Schon, bassist Ross Valory, drummer Prairie Prince (replaced by Aynsley Dunbar), and guitarist George Tickner (who left after...
