Editors’ Notes

1984’s The Last in Line picked up where Holy Diver left off. As an original rock 'n' roll pioneer, Ronnie James Dio could work within the idiom of '80s heavy metal without seeming trendy. He was a true believer in rock's muscular power and freedom. Backed by the classic Dio lineup of bassist Jimmy Bain, guitarist Vivian Campbell, and unstoppable drummer Vinny Appice, The Last in Line is anchored by the marauding speed-metal attacks of “We Rock,” “I Speed At Night,” and “Evil Eyes.” One of Dio’s great talents was to make the practice of heavy metal commitment feel like a modern-day version of the Crusades. Remember, 1984 was a time when heavy metal fans weren't just alienated from popular culture but also demonized and persecuted by the media. Because Dio invested so much heart and conviction into his music—and because, at age 38, he was an obvious elder statesman—he became a leader within a culture of malcontents. Even though The Last in Line is best remembered for its uncompromising metal anthems, Dio’s taste for tuneful hooks is equally apparent on “Mystery” and “Eat Your Heart Out.”

RJD and the boys took me to highs unknown. Thank you Ronnie, sleep well tonight mate, god bless and thank you for giving this incredible bit of wax to the ages. RIP.

The most powerful voice in music history.

The Last in Line starts out with two epic tracks: "We Rock" & "The Last in Line". From there the album becomes a bit uneven. Best of the Beast is really the ultimate Dio album, in that it takes the best songs off of his first four albums (Holy Diver-Dream Evil) along with a few songs off of other albums. Dio has an amazing voice but his albums are often filled with filler material.

For a brief spell during the mid-'80s, the heavy metal quintet Dio were one of the top U.S. concert attractions, boasting one of the most over the top stage acts of its time loaded with props and special effects (lasers, explosions, a giant dragon, etc.). The group's leader was singer Ronnie James Dio, who had previously become acquainted with the metal masses as the frontman of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow from 1975-1978 and Black Sabbath from 1979-1982. Come the early '80s, Ronnie James was ready...
