EDITORS’ NOTES

While Amy Oelsner has been independently releasing home-recorded music since 2004, Elastic, her second studio album, showcases a notable shift in gears. Her trademark lo-fi pop is in full effect, but here she’s also plucky, fierce, and muscular. “Lavender Night” melds stabbing, driving guitars with uneasy, minor-key bridges, while “Spill” and “Spacey Feeling” employ vocal layering and distortion to magnify her gutsy voice. But with the twinkling “David,” she doesn’t stray too far from her dream-pop roots.

About Amy O

Starting as a home-recorded singer-and-ukulele project and expanding over the course of several albums into a full-fledged indie rock band, Amy O is the namesake of songwriter Amy Oelsner. The self-taught guitarist started writing songs while growing up in Fayetteville, Arkansas. College and work eventually took her to Ohio, Massachusetts, Brooklyn, and then Bloomington, Indiana. All the while, she continued her practice of writing, recording, and self-releasing albums, including the 2012 series Songs from January (released in February 2012), Songs from April, Songs from July, and Songs from October (issued in April 2013). Released in June 2014, My Hand the Thief was her last album to be entirely self-made. By then based in Bloomington, 2016’s Arrow was recorded with guests on bass, drums, and additional guitar, engineered and mixed by Patrick Jennings, and mastered by Russian Recording's Mike Bridavsky (owner of Internet celebrity cat and recording artist Lil BUB). It was released by Let's Pretend Records. Bridavsky returned to produce Amy O’s next album and label debut for Winspear. Arriving in August 2017, Elastic was a set of thoughtful, harmonic punk-pop featuring Oelsner with Damion Schiralli on lead guitar, Aaron Denton on keyboards, Madeline Robinson on bass, and Justin Vollmar on drums. ~ Marcy Donelson
