14 Songs, 48 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

While writing his second album, UK singer/songwriter James Bay adopted a David Bowie quote as his mission statement: “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.” Secretly hunkered down in a basement studio when he was supposed to be on a six-month break, Bay felt free to experiment. He reemerged with a questing set of songs that crosses into simmering funk-rock, taut alt-pop, and folky electro-R&B from Bon Iver’s neck of the woods. The risk in diverting from the Americana-tinged pop-rock of his GRAMMY®-nominated debut, Chaos and the Calm, is mitigated by unshakable melodies and Bay’s versatile voice, which continues to crackle with the joy and pain of love. Mission accomplished.

Why?

He became famous by being a singer song writer who plays actual instruments, not using a lot of auto tune & relying on electronic beats. I’m really disappointed in this & most of music in general that is coming out lately. Why does everyone have to sound like everyone else on the radio?

Where’s James Bay? I don’t hear him.

Ok I love James Bay. However, these tracks don’t even sound like him. Where’s the rawness, soulfulness, and great songwriting that attracted me and many other fans to him in the first place? The dance track is cute and easy on the ears. It’s fun. However, all I’m thinking listening to this is “REALLY⁉️” “What IS this?” (In the voice of Derek Zoolander)
Who am I listening to?
His voice is autocorrected too!! Wth🤯
Who told him to change? Rawness to me is were the voice bleeds gold. Now his voice is bleeding Pink Lemonade.😟

Stop

Stop comparing this guy to Bob Dylan. Just because he has folk tendencies doesn’t mean he’s the “new Dylan.” Their styles are still very different. If anything, Bay’s first album is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, may he Rest In Peace. And who cares if an artist wants to shift sounds; these songs do not sound like generic pop. Stop being so ignorant.
