Album Review

Although the Fat Wreck Chords style of galloping — Bad Religion-fueled punk can be found on The Element of Sonic Defiance — the maturity of Strung Out has developed with the release of this EP. There's a darker, harder approach to the bands usual fast-paced pop-punk, almost to the point of having a hardcore presence. A nice step up for a band that has been previously labeled as a "NOFX-clone," but nothing that could reel them out of the aforementioned "Fat" category.

Brain Function in Full Engagement, Body Locked In Vigilance

This album is one of the best kept secrets in punk rock, and nothing short of a masterpiece. From front to back, this album feels like traveling at light speed to another dimension where musical genres and poetic forms as we know them cease to exist. This album is a phenomenon really; something of a journey through science fiction and the politics of our time. Step on up and have your ticket handy. The Element of Sonic Defiance will rattle your mind, jolt your senses, and disintegrate all the formulae you've come to expect of modern so cal punk.

Highly underrated

I'm forever indebted to this record and this band.

A New Direction

Twisted by Design was such an amazing record, and after the bassist Jim Cherry left the band, many wondered how the band would fare without the help of Cherry in the writing process. With the addiction of Chris Aiken, the band took on a heavier, darker approach to their music. This album is dark, bleak and unorthodox. The only song on here that resembles the metal infused pop punk th band was known for is "Jackie-O", and that song was originally recorded back in 1996. Despite afew uplifting moments (the bridge on "Blew" and "Everyday" and the outro on "Mephisto), the album offers a darker view on everything and more metaphorical lyrics than the past. The EP may turn some off, but it is a necessary and beneficial step in the right direction for the evolution of the band's sound.

Mixing up punk speed, metal guitar power, and a dash of electronics for seasoning, Southern California rockers Strung Out were formed in 1989, with a lineup featuring vocalist Jason Cruz, guitarists Jake Kiley and Rob Ramos, bassist Jim Cherry, and drummer Adam Austin. By the time the band released their first 7", Austin had been replaced by Jordan Burns, formerly of Ten Foot Pole. The quintet signed with NOFX bassist Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords label in 1993 and issued a debut album, Another Day...
