Editors’ Notes

It’s easy to get lost in the sheer abundance of sounds found on Thao & Mirah’s self-titled debut album. From the raucous tribal noise-cloud of “Eleven” to the playful junkyard twang of “Squareneck,” the duo serves up an off-kilter blend of folk, electronica and avant-garde elements to striking effect. But beyond their imaginative textures, singer/songwriters Thao Nguyen and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn fill the album with a beguiling if sometime elusive eroticism, couched in teasing imagery and childlike melodies. Acoustic-centered pieces like “Folks” and “Little Cup” beckon with caressing vocals and subtle rhythmic pulsations. “Rubies and Rocks” turns up the groove quotient with brazen trumpets and honking sax, while “Sugar and Plastic” slides into a dreamy variation on country blues. Thao displays a soul diva-like persona on “How Dare You,” contrasting with the coffeehouse folk vibe radiated by Mirah on “Spaced Out Orbit.” As producer, Merrill Garbus (from tUnE-yArDs) juxtaposes the delicate with the disquieting, underscoring the flitting moods within the songs.

Customer Reviews

Ear candy.

Cosmo said, "if you like Regina Spektor, you will love Thao & Mirah". Truth.
The music is upbeat, eccentric, but mellow enough that you can listen to it no matter your mood.

Excellent Musicianship

I have anxiously been waiting for this album for awhile now. I have been a fan of Thao Ngyuen for awhile but was unfamiliar with Mirah. Individually they are both excellent artists and together they make a fantastic duo. My favorite songs on the album would have to be How Dare You and Little Cup. I can't wait to hear more from them!

WONDERFUL!

I have bought hundreds of albums on ITunes, but this is the first one I have ever felt compelled to review. It is amazingly well put together and there is not a single song that I do not enjoy. I am a big fan of both Mirah and Thao and am very happy to see and hear this coupling.

Mirah — full name Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn — was born on her mother's kitchen table. The daughter of artistic parents, the singer/songwriter had a passion for music from early childhood. While fronting the jazz band the Hot Set in Olympia, Washington, playing wedding parties and bar mitzvahs to earn extra cash, Mirah began writing her own brand of lo-fi, slice-of-life indie pop, a style later compared to that of grrrl rocker Liz Phair.
