The definitive Elijah

Richard Hickox once again displays his considerable accumen for leading epic orchestral and choral works. Mendelssohn, having translated his own work from German to English, premiered this work in English; this recording remaining true to the translation. The line-up of performers is great. Chandos, with all of their experience in rich recordings, does not disappoint. If you must have Mendelssohn's Elijah, you must have this recording!

Not quite but close.

I have performed portions of this work. It is inherently dramatic in composition. This recording is so smoothly and flawlessly performed it robs the work of its drama. The choir sounds almost dispassionate and the orchestra seems to be playing a concert piece. It's performed almost at a leisurely pace too. And I find the soprano annoying. She's pleading for the life of her son, but she sounds like she's complaining that someone didn't clean their room - again. On the upside, the words are clear and understandable and the musical cues are clear. I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to learn it before a performance.

Known as one of England's most gifted and versatile ensembles, it is the resident orchestra at London's famous Barbican Centre. This and the...
