Album Review

On Elite, the third full-length from deathcore crushers Within the Ruins, the band returns with an album of technically dazzling metal that often feels in danger of being dragged down by its production. Packed with lots of choppy edits and pans, these stylistic flourishes, while certainly adding a certain hyperactive dynamic to the songs, often feel distracting, taking away from Within the Ruins' already superb musicianship, leaving the album teetering dangerously on the edge of being over-produced. Fortunately, the bandmembers prove themselves to be incredibly solid songwriters in their own right, so while Elite might feel a bit overdone at times, the skill and finesse with which these guys execute on their ideas definitely make up for it.

Teleportation to the Future!

I just found these guys recently, but after I listened through all of their old albums, I immediately preordered this bag of gems. Drop everything, go into a cave mode, buy this album, go on the journey.

Buy this album. If you like any of Within The Ruin's previous work, you will love this latest effort. The music is very well put together. "Why use 4 notes when 27 will fit?" This seems to be the running theme for these guys! But they don't just throw a ton of trudging up and down scale work into these songs. It all has melody and actually thought out. Original. Unique. Heavy. Interesting. You'll want to spin this many, many times and each time you'll discover something new that will make you want to listen to it again! BUY THIS!

Formed by drummer Kevin McGuill and guitarist Joe Cocchi while the pair were still in high school, Within the Ruins got their start in Westfield, Massachusetts in 2003. Though the band has gone through a number of lineup changes since their inception, with founders McGuill and Cocchi being the only longstanding members, they eventually settled into a lineup rounded out by bassist Andrew Tate and singer Tim Goergen. With an intense deathcore sound that merges metalcore's intensity with technical,...
