The House of Apples and Eyeballs is a thrillingly loud, rambunctious, and inventive collaboration between two groups who are very impressive separately, the Octopus Project and Black Moth Super Rainbow. The former brings an intelligent, studied post-rock angle to the mix while the latter adds a goofy, sunshiny electro-pop approach (and some vocoder). Together, the sound they make is aggressive, melodic, and startlingly good. From the opening track, "Spiracle," which clatters like an industrial washing machine with an unbalanced load, to the beatless noisescape that ends the record in a melancholy haze ("Foxy and the Weight of the World"), there's no shortage of dazzling surprises. The first time through you really have no idea what's coming next. It could be sweetly chiming guitars ("Elq Milq"), outer space R&B ("All the Friends You Can Eat"), or subdued techno ("Beds"). Mostly it's just intelligently crafted, blindingly cool tracks like "Lollipopsichord," "Runite Castles," or "Psychic Swelling." This is a collaboration that should be made into an official entity. Once you've crafted something so right, you just have to stick together, right?
The Black Octopus Super Rainbow Moth Project
This is Black Moth Super Rainbow at their best maybe. Combined with the awesomeness of the Octopus Project, they can't lose. Gnarly vocoders and strumming guitars, it's such a good album. The best song by far is "Spiracle". It feels like you're on a blue acid trip, underwater with rainbow as you both bend together. "Tony Face" is like you're falling into a deep blue sinkhole with green rain and purple eagles neon foxes dance all around you. "All the Friends You Can Eat" is like walking down your street with everything in bright colors at the mailbox comes alive and starts stompin' down the street with Mr. Happy Frying Pan. "Royal Firecracker Teeth" is like someone set a rainbow on fire and then fireworks shot out from it. "Foxy and the Weight of the World" is like a moonlit night with a bunch of neon foxes and wolves with glasses staring it the dripping moon. How that for visuals?
Groovalicious Tasty Bits!!!!
Im old- and I love these guys!!! I have BMSR's 1st CD and it is fantastic- but their music just keeps getting better!!! Im totally geeked at this moment and feel the need to be alone with the groove- excuse please....my head may just explode as well!
I've had this album for a few mounths now, and it hasn't gotten old to me yet! The Octopus Project and Black Moth Super Rainbow are two great bands, and together they made a mindblowing album. I don't have a head, it exploded when I hurd the first few track. That's how good it is!
