Snaking its way through soaring trumpet, strings, hard-rock shredding, Baroque arpeggios, and a shuddering trance climax, the epic title track of Armin van Buuren's sixth studio album makes no secret of his ambitions. Favoring guest singers with gritty voices, like Kensington and Mr. Probz, the Dutch EDM maestro puts as much emphasis on radio-ready choruses as he does festival-sized builds and drops. "Embargo," with Cosmic Gate, is pure, unadulterated uplifting trance, but the acoustic "Looking for Your Name" offers proof that van Buuren remains electrifying even when unplugged.
It's official, everyone. Armin has joined the likes of Tiesto and so many others -- who have jumped from the trance tree into radio-friendly bubble gum crappola. Total sellout album. This doesn't even sound like Armin. Why, Armin, why?
Thank goodness for Markus Schulz and aly & fila, because if not for their music I would've just given up on dance music in general. Just listen to what it has become, gone are the days of Sasha, digweed, oakey, old tiesto, etc, just some actual emotion to the genre! Now it's f'n horns and Jesus poses with poser kids holding up hearts with their hands! I find myself listening to old nick warren lately then listening to this garbage. There used to be an emphasis on mixing skills, but now it's 2-3 min bangers. Try YouTubeing audien mix to see my point. He would've been tackled off the stage back then. I hate to sound like that old guy, but seriously even our old cheese was better than this generic garbage that fills the "dance" page. I'm done with armin! Never again will I be tricked to buying a "a state of trance", really that's trance these days? Stop BSing us and call it what it is, edm mainstage. At least there's aly & fila. Enjoy being the next tiesto, who might I add when I met was a real jerk and totally changed my perspective on him, and say thank you to the ones who supported you to this point, after all you gotta get paid right? It'll be great for you to see these newbies worshipping and blind reviewing your work like a Taylor swift fan. And they'll be the same ones calling me a hater, but just like above and beyond, I'm done with you. Dance music is dead, well not fully because there's global underground and balance. At least I have asot 2006.
The Next Legend To Sell His Soul To Money
It's like every day another dj sells out. All of these tracks sound like something I've heard regurgitated by local djs at clubs. Can't tell if this is Armin or if it's Tiesto, David Guetta or any other artist who had a special place in my heart and left glory behind for a quick payout. I get that recycling beats is quicker and easier to make money, but it's a major sell out to the people who have been listening to you since before EDM was "in". I guess we will always have the classics to go back to. I just wish I could hear something brand new to move me again.
