She’s doing something different and should be given credit

I’ve heard Esperanza receive some flack from "jazz fans" about “abandoning” the genre, but whoever said that you have to stick to doing the same thing? I for one am pleased that Esperanza is doing whatever she wants to do artistically. Esperanza Spalding does not owe anybody anything. Who cares what "the critics" say. I hear a lot of Joni Mitchell in One… If only she recorded a studio version of her cover of Help Me that she does on tour hint hint… Looking forward to hearing the entire record.

Eclectic and Rewarding

An intoxicating potpourri of jazz/fusion/R&B and even rock. At times you hear Joni, Frank Zappa, Chick Corea, Steely Dan and even Kate Bush. Yet, she owns this and it is uniquely hers and hers alone. Will take a few listens before the complex arrangements and obscured melodies seep into my consciousness, but I really dig the vibe here. A discordant and asymmetrical masterpiece. Do you get it!

Amazing

I saw it live. Best show I've ever been to. I loved the musical direction she took. It's her, through and through. Can't wait for the release.
