Album Review

Beulah's sophomore record is another irresistible addition to the Elephant 6 canon — artfully texturing its infectious guitar pop melodies with lush strings, woodwinds, and horns (courtesy of no less than 18 guest musicians), When Your Heartstrings Break delivers fully on the promise of the group's debut, Handsome Western States. What sets Beulah apart from their E6 peers is a straightforward pop sensibility that dreamier, more spaced-out counterparts like the Olivia Tremor Control or Elf Power lack — for all of their flourishes, the 11 tracks which comprise When Your Heartstrings Break are at their core simple love songs; under their ironic surface, Miles Kurosky's lyrics possess a disarming sweetness which perfectly complements his buoyant melodies. Highly recommended.

Beware! This little band from CA will make a believer out of you. Incredible pop melodies where the classic style of Brain Wilson meets the cynical, laid back 90's slacker style of pavement. Quite possibly the BEST BAND YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF! Sound interesting? You better believe it is, 11 songs, not one clunker. GUARANTEED!!!

this album is great. take wilco's Summerteeth, and combine it with the shins and you get this. its a great album, "sunday under glass" and "emma blowgun's last stand" are my favorites, but the ending track "if we can land a man on the moon, then...." is perfect. can't go wrong with this

i love this to death. buy there album. or i'll bite your head off.

While having a small dislike for one another, Kurosky and Swan did share a fondness for music. They two put their animosity aside in 1996 and spent the next year and a half mastering a lo-fi, indie rock style and recording songs. This resulted in the release of the A Small Cattle Drive in a Snow Storm 7" in 1997. Anne Mellinger joined the group in...
