iTunes Review

Tool's Maynard James Keenan established A Perfect Circle as a project to serve his melodic side. This collection features some brave reinterpretations of politically inspired tunes that enhance the original versions. John Lennon's "Imagine" takes on a sense of doom that the original track (and all past covers) never, well, imagined. Nick Lowe's "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love and Understanding" sounds like it's being transmitted from another galaxy, with treated guitars, keyboards, and percussive sounds echoing into the ether. Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" evokes the strong ambience of a 4AD Records goth project, turning the song's overt message into a subliminal one. Two originals—"Passive," written with Trent Reznor for the since-kaput Tapeworm project, and "Counting Bodies Like Sheep"—are among the album's most aggressive. The remaining covers are intriguing. "When the Levee Breaks" (a Memphis Minnie track made famous to rock audiences by Led Zeppelin) has its blues gutted and a Portishead-like mystery put in its place. Brilliant!

Pure Existentialism!!!

I listen to this album often. The collaborative efforts on all of the APC albums, really get to me on another level...
While, I appreciate the originals; these songs almost take on a entire new embodiment w/ meaning & forthright views. Thank you for the APC formation, guys!

Anything by Maynard is canon.

Not a bad song on the whole album.

Passive (Tapeworm cover) and Counting Bodies are epic. The Imagine cover is pretty cool. The rest of the album is a disgrace. I love APC and tried hard to like eMotive, but there's no way around it. I'm embarrassed for Keenan and the gang. They sacrificed their art for their political motivations and the fans suffered greatly, left with only two albums worth listening to.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Formed by Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan and former Tool guitar tech Billy Howerdel, A Perfect Circle is an extension of the alt-metal-fused-with-art rock style popularized by Tool in the early to mid-'90s. While similar to Tool in intensity and melancholy, A Perfect Circle is less dark and more melodic, with a theatrical, ambient quality that incorporates occasional strings and unusual instrumentation. After the release of Ænima in 1996, Tool found themselves in the midst of an extended legal...
