Beauty on Display

I love this album from Palms. It has beautifully crafted songs that are hard to define, but send shivers up the spine. It reminds me of the music that someone who is going to jump off a bridge, hears in their own head. Or, standing on tracks, waiting for the train to come and smash you to pieces. "Der Koenig" and "Monte Alban" are standouts. You are not sure if you are floating or flying, but you know you're weightless.

Der Koenig

So I haven't heard the whole album - This is just a review for the song Der Koenig. I heard it on NPR's All Songs Considered podcast, when it appeared on a compilation album. This song is ethereal, surreal and hypnotizing. I wish the rest of the songs on this cd were more along this vein. Highly recommended single from the album!

Palms - It's Midnight In Honolulu

Slow, languid and contemplative songs fill this album by Palms. It's the echoed chanting and recalled memories that make songs like End of Term and Agnieska real stand outs. The tranquility is ruptured by the shamanistic screaming in Hang Your Head and Der Koenig but still remnants of silvery melancholia permeate. A personal favorite track, Leather Daddies, tells the story of a museum-love in the Taxidermy Academy. It is harmonious as sandpaper and silk, reminiscent of Lou Reed's prose with Marc Bolan's humour. The entire album has a Post-Punk/Industrial/Neo Folk feel, yet brings an innovative sensitivity not common within those genres. Songs are clean and fresh, not over-produced or mushy. Both thunderous and raindrop quiet Palms show a nuance and promise. Buy this album.
