Entanglements

Entanglements

This Pacific Northwest band is led by Zac Pennington, an unabashed fan of the melodramatic. For Parenthetical Girls' third album, they traded an experimental edge for stylized baroque and did indeed go big: lining up a dozen or so classically trained musicians to paint Pennington's theatrical tunes in shiny, rococo splendor. They embellish the strings and woodwinds often found in baroque pop with everything from banjo to harpsichord. Even accordion, kantele (in the dulcimer family), and tuba join in this orchestral carnival. This isn't to say it's a mad scene: Entanglements—despite its title—is carefully arranged, never claustrophobic, playfully adventurous, and often luridly transgressive. It's not for everyone, but fans of Rufus Wainwright or Wild Beasts will appreciate Pennington's boisterous falsetto, the juxtaposition of woozy grace and madcap cartoon music, the Judy Garland–worthy melancholy, and the pained self-examination. The cover of the '60s tune "Windmills of Your Mind" is a smart and sophisticated tango of strings, and the boy-girl vocals of Pennington and band member Rachel Jensen make a perfect flight of fancy.
