We love Madeline and Cy

Cy Coleman is often overshadowed by Sondheim and the dreaded Andrew Loyd Webber. But he can be brilliant, especially if he is given a time period and a theme...like a train. He takes you back and makes you feel like you're singing in black and white. Madeline Kahn, of course, was the funniest woman to ever live. Many didn't know she studied to be an opera singer. This show, written for her, tests her vocal ability with the high runs of aria quality and the silly parts where she is not afraid to alter her voice for the comedy. She is simply hysterical. And, of course, the whole story of her being such a diva during the show, while playing a diva, makes it all too real. She IS Lily Garland. And I miss her very much. Buy it for her brilliance. Oh, and Kevin Kliein and Imogene Coca are pretty good too.

Cy Coleman's masterpiece

Even though this is listed as a "partial album" it is the entire 20 track CD. Unfortunately, you have to spend $20 to get the whole recording. Better to buy the CD from Amazon. A classic broadway musical from the late 70's, a total charm of a musical.

On the Twentieth Century

This is one of those albums it is really best to buy in hard copy for the wonderful booklet with information about the story and the show, though you can gather most of the story from the music itself. Having said that, get this music any way you can get it. If you are a lover of brilliant, clever lyrics, and unforgettable melodies with lush orchestrations, this is a must-have. This show by Betty Comden and Adolph Green is truly one of the funniest ever written, and Cy Coleman's music is worthy of an opera company. Based on the play that became the wonderful and seminal John Barrymore - Carol Lombard movie "Twentieth Century," the lyrics and music capture the story and character of the piece every bit as well as "My Fair Lady" captured "Pygmalian." Cy Coleman's musical language perfectly evokes screwball comedy and the rythmic urgency of the elegant rushing steam locomotive for which the show is named. Performances by John Cullum, Madeline Kahn, Imogene Coca, and Kevin Kline. This is a rare gem not to be missed, ripe for rediscovery. You will be glad you got it.
